Who Eats Free

When my car bettery died unexpectedly yesterday morning, I ended up stuck on U Street for awhile. Over at Ben's there was a crowd, and something near the grill caught my eye. The posted list of "who eats free" has for years contained just a single entry: Bill Cosby, for his legendary patronage of the place. Well you can probably guess who the list was recently amended to include, can't you?

The Obama family has excellent taste. Perhaps when we next go to Ben's, the soon-to-be First Family will be there and treat us all to chili-dogs! (Ahhh .... Just thinking about Ben's makes me want scrapple.)

Yeah I asked them about that when I was home for thanksgiving last month -- they'd added it a couple days before the election, but said the Obama's have yet to take them up on it. I'd say give them a few days after the inauguration, and they'll swing by.

Tine- enough with the scrapple. It's carcinogenic.

JA- Hello! I think so, too. Though can you imagine the motorcade trying to get onto U St the week of Inauguration anytime? It'll be mobbed.

I dreamed I saw Bill Cosby and asked him about this and he told me that if your bill is more than $100 you can get your name in a lottery to be added to the list. Random.

I think your name should be added to the list after all this free publicity you've given them, don't you?

Jess- It's a sign. Move to DC. I'll give you a $100 bill if you do.

Christopher- We had a work party there once, so I have the email of Nizam Ali, the owner's son. I'll ask him what he thinks. You don't know until you ask...

christopher- also, I made it onto DCblogs.com with this post, so maybe it's me who owes them for the publicity?

I just saw that your car battery had died and was then reminded of the terrible fiasco in Alewife when your car battery died a lifetime ago. Remember when a helpful person jumped the jeep with the cables reversed and then the helpful policeman drove us to buy a new battery but the poor jeep was beyond the solutions of helpful people by that time…

Although most of what I eat is carcinogenic, I'm not sure scrapple falls into that category. It's the pink meats, usually, with nitrates, that pose the carcinognenic risk, such as my other favorite pig products: bacon, ham, burnt hot dogs, etc.
If I'm incorrect, however, I'm sure you'll let me know.

J- I was also reminded of that terrible incident. That one was my own fault as I left the lights on after we ended up parking on the roof the the garage; this time it was just an old battery with dead cells (though my extensive use of the heated seats during my 1.5 mile commute may have had something to do with it as well). Also what I remember about that day was you shooed me off to my first day of grad school...'go on, yo uhave to go, i'll handle it...' and you did. As much as anyone could, that is. :) xxx

tine- no way are pig snouts not carcinogenic. anyway, google pork in ireland if you want a real scare- they basically had a countrywide recall of all pork products. cease and desist witht he pig consumption. you might not have made it through.

First of all, pig snouts are not naturally carcinogenic; they may become so, I assume, when combined with some chemical additive.
Secondly, in case you're confused, I don't live in Ireland, so no worries.

Read your article, if I just would say: very good, it is somewhat insufficient, but I am still tempted to say: really good!
